Water is the most essential part of our everyday life. It comprises 75% of the human body and about 70% of the entire world. But what does water do? Saves our life or kills our children?

The government continuously strives to provide water to all rural and urban areas of the country, but the responsibility of clean and hygienic drinking water is our own. Here are some common diseases that are caused by impure water.

  1. Cholera- it is an intestinal infection caused due to unfiltered and infected water.
  2. Diarrhea- it often results from contaminated water and food.
  3. Hepatitis A- it is an acute liver infection caused by drinking contaminated water.
  4. Typhoid- it is a bacterial infection caused by drinking water contaminated by another patient.
  5. Dysentery- it is an inflammation of intestines that is caused by the innumerable bacteria and parasites living in water.

The above examples are only a handful of the threats humans, especially Indians are exposed to. It has been estimated that 37.7 million Indians are affected by water-borne diseases annually, out of which, 1.5 million children die of diarrhea. These statistics are for the rural areas only, but the children and adults in the urban areas are also affected by the same diseases.

The quality of our water, when monitored from 1995-2009, showed that the pollution in India’s water was microbial. This is the main cause of all the above diseases. Apart from this, our lifestyle and habits pollute the water more with each passing day. The water has become so contaminated that the authorities are unable to treat the sewage, which may end up contaminating the whole of water bodies.

But where is the solution to all this? The solution lies in your hands, in your home. Modern day purifiers filter your water, killing the germs and bacteria present in it. Water purification is the only thing that can lead us out of this era of pollutions, disease and insanitation.

These purifiers need to be installed at homes, schools, tuition centers, play areas and any other place where children get together. We also need to educate children, their teachers, family members and neighbors, to create an environment where everyone has access to clean, pure water.
